1 Cor 6:19-20
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. NKJV
- This is such a strange concept. I am not my own. How I live is no longer my choice to make. When I choose to take what I have given to God for my own purpose that is stealing. Stealing has a harsh sound to it. You hear it and think it sounds so bad but a little compromise doesn’t seem so bad. I am not my own and as soon as I take what I gave to God and use it in a way contrary to his commands I am stealing and committing vandalism against God’s property. I think marriage may help me understand this strange principle, as I give myself and my money to her yet I still have control of what I have given away. Though I still control my body and my money they are no longer mine to do whatever I like with. God help me to steward the life you have given me well. I want to honor you in all that I do in every area of my life.
Prov 25:16
16 Have you found [pleasure sweet like] honey? Eat only as much as is sufficient for you, lest, being filled with it, you vomit it. AMP
- We need balance in life. We often find something we like and dive straight off the deep end. Lord help, me to stay balanced to seek you first without reserve and keep everything else in balance.
Prov 25:28
* 28 Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.
NIV
- Eph 4:26; 1 Peter 1:13, Prov 16:32
- At first I tend to see this simply along the lines of Anger. Someone who can’t control their own temper is a disaster waiting to happen. But it is saying much more then that See 1 Peter 1:13, 1 Peter 5:8 Satan is looking to attack you like a lion. He is out to destroy you (John 10:10) Lack of self-control is worse then an open door. An open door is leave an opening for the enemy, missing walls leaves every angle open. 1 Cor 7:5 talks about temptation that enters through lack of self control. 2 Tim 1:7 ESV God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and Self-control. I have no excuse for God gave me all that I need.
- God help me to be full of your spirit. Overflowing with the fruit of your spirit (Gal 5:22). Let a heart set on pleasing you fill me with Self-control, may my love and fear of you produce a hatetred of sin in me.
