Ps 62:4
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. ESV
- Prov 26:23; The world is full of two-faced people. Putting your trust in people is deadly trap Prov 29:25. God, help me to place my trust in you alone and help me not to be two faced. I want to be full of character, regardless of who is or isn’t watching.
Ps 62:1-2
For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. ESV
- There was no question on where David was looking for help. Are you looking for help from God alone or are you looking to people, money, or things to be your fortress?
- 1 Chron 5:20. Where you look for help determines what help you get. Are you looking to God or to your own strength, money (Ps 62:10), or to other people (Prov 29:25)? God, you alone are the rock that isn’t shaken. Help me to always place my trust in you.
1 Chron 5:20
20 They were helped in fighting them, and God handed the Hagrites and all their allies over to them, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him. NIV
- They were great warriors as it states in verse 18, but their victory didn’t come from their strength. It says that they trusted in the Lord and cried out to Him, and He answered their prayers. See the Contrast to those in verse 25. Am I trying to go through life’s problems in my own strength, or have I put my trust in God crying out for His help? God, I need your help. I want you to to be the rock that I put my trust in. Ps 62:2;
2 Kings 18:6
6 For he held fast to the Lord. He did not depart from following him, but kept the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses. ESV
- This verse seems to be connected to the following verse. By choosing the Lord he was able to walk with and receive the blessing from the Lord.
2 Kings 18:7
7 And the Lord was with him; wherever he went out, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and would not serve him. ESV
- He was blessed of the Lord and prospered in all that he did, but this didn’t mean he never had no opposition (Vs 13). I think we often incorrectly believe that with God there are no problems, but what we see here that it is not the absence of them, but God’s help to come out through them victories. Having problems doesn’t mean you have left the will of God. Sure, there are some problems that are the direct result of disobedience, but even the obedient will face challenges. If we do things God’s way, leaning on God, we can go through them in his strength instead of our own Col 1:29. It was when he trusted in the Lord that he received the Lord’s help. 2 Kings 19:1;
Num 13:33
33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” ESV
- They assumed that every one saw them the same way they saw themselves, but this wasn’t the case. Josh 2:11 tells us that the people of the land were terrified of the Israelites. We often have a skewed view of ourselves. Look at Gideon. (Judges 6:15-16) He considered himself a loser, but he looked liked a ruler. (Judges 8:18-19). Is your view of yourself holding you back? Do you see what God sees? Lord, help me to see myself as you see me. Help me not to hold back in fear. Help me to rise up and to obey even when it feels like it is too big for me to handle. Help me to trust you, and trust that if you are telling me to do something, you will give me the strength I need to make it happen.
- Num 14:8;
- Ex 15:15; & Josh 2:9; Their original confession was great, but it is what they kept confessing that they acted on. What they had originally confessed came to pass, but they were too busy acting on there second and very different confession to reap the blessings that could have been theirs. I think I too have done that many times.
Ex 16:4-5
4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.” NKJV
- vs 26; Ezek 20:12; What are you doing with what God has given you? If this is a test, will you pass? With this, their obedience was tested. God says you will do with much what you do with little (Luke 16:10). So, then, is how I handle the money that he has given me now a test? If you were God, based on how you have handled what you have and your level of obedience, would you give you more? Mal 3:10
Part of the test was just if you trust God. Can you trust that he will do what he said? They were to gather for one day, trusting that he was going to provide again tomorrow. With the exception of the Sabbath, where they were to gather two days worth. Do you trust God that he will provide for you as he promised? Are you willing to recognize him as your source by giving to him first?
Matt 25:15
15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. NKJV
-He gave to them according to their ability. First, it means their ability wasn’t all the same. God is not a communist. Second, it means he doesn’t give more then you can handle (1 Cor 10:13). Third, note when God judges them He looks not just at what they have, but what they had to work with (Luke 12:48). Have we been faithful with what God have given us?
Zeph 3:1-2
Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, to the oppressing city!
2 She has not obeyed His voice, She has not received correction; She has not trusted in the LORD, She has not drawn near to her God. NKJV
- It gives a description of the rebellious. 1 Sam 15:23;
1. They are defiled
2. The don’t listen
3. They refuse correction
4. They don’t trust in God
5. They don’t draw near to God.
- Does some or all of the description of the rebellious fit you? Just a good thing for us to check.
Ps 125:1
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. ESV
- Ps 27:1; If your trusting in the Lord, what is going to shake you. Sure bad news might come but if you hear you lost everything you owned it comes whether your trust is in money, things or in God. If your trust is in God then it won’t shake you. Only the things you trust in can shake you.
Mark 5:36-39
36 But Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just trust me.” 37 Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter and James and John. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the weeping and wailing. 39 He went inside and spoke to the people. “Why all this weeping and commotion?” he asked. “The child isn’t dead; she is only asleep.” NLT
- Jesus spoke with authority and with no doubt even when others brought a bad report. He did not tolerate negative talk. By saying she is only asleep He was speaking as though she had already been healed before she was.
